Thomas Tuchel Questions Wembley Crowd Support Despite Emphatic Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his regret that the England team did not get stronger support from the home crowd during their decisive triumph over Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his team continue their strong performance, with strikes from Morgan Rogers, Watkins, and Saka inside the initial stages settling the game. However, he was unhappy with the energy at the national stadium.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a organized team and we did very well,” Tuchel commented. “It could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the additional goals. It was quiet. We didn’t get any energy back from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you provide in 20 minutes? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s sad because the team deserved greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a rivalry match. I would have wished for a greater support in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to get behind us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to regain energy, but that’s football and that is it.”
Squad Decisions Vindicated by Display
Away from risking a dispute among supporters, the manager also caused a stir by excluding Jude Bellingham and Foden from his squad. Yet the choice was validated by Rogers excelling in the No 10 position and scoring his maiden goal for his country.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel explained. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is fighting for his place.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy expressed hope that his team, who face a strong Belgian side in a important World Cup qualifier on next week, improve after their disappointing first-half display.
“This is why I wanted this game,” the manager said. “I need to see our standing. What are our ambitions? Who do we want to be? Today gives me inspiration.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Watkins was substituted at half-time after hitting a goalpost and may miss out when the national team play their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on next week.
