Josh Hazlewood cleared from injury but Abbott out of Ashes Test
The bowler has claimed 295 Test scalps at an average of 24.21 across 76 Test matches
The green light was given to Hazlewood to link up with Australia's squad for the initial Test against England post-injury worries, but fellow pace bowler Abbott will miss the match
Both suffered hamstring issues during their match for New South Wales in the Victoria clash in the Sheffield Shield this past Wednesday
Tests indicated Hazlewood (34) avoided tissue injury. Abbott, 33, who hasn't played Tests, sustained a "moderate grade" injury
Skipper Pat Cummins is unavailable for the opening Test, starting November 21, so the loss of a key pace option in Hazlewood would have been a major blow
Abbott would have been unlikely to play during the Western Australia Test, as Hazlewood prepares to team up Starc and Boland as the specialist seamers
Cummins, who is recovering from spinal concerns, appears to be likely to comeback for the second Test commencing December fourth
Batter Steve Smith will captain the side during the captain's recovery
Similar to most Aussie squad members, the bowler took part in ongoing fixtures of Sheffield Shield matches ahead of the England series
Before this week, he was absent from red-ball cricket for New South Wales in more than a year
He noticed discomfort in his posterior chain during the final stages of the match on Wednesday and was substituted taking preventive measures
The two bowlers came out to bat during the follow-on innings in a losing cause in a substantial margin
"There's seven days from the Test series - we consistently choose the side of caution," said Cummins
"The medical staff sought to identify the nature of the problem prior to testing it and potentially making the condition"
"He seldom shows him chipper, therefore it was positive to witness his smile"
"He knows his body thoroughly. It seemed he felt a little bit worried (and) wanted to get medical assessment"
Abbott earned 57 caps with the national team in limited-overs formats
